Obituaries & Condolences

Donald Reuben Smith Jr. 72 years old of Port Charlotte, FL & New Berlin, NY passed away on July 7, 2023, at his home in Port Charlotte.

Donald was born on April 27, 1951, in Cooperstown, NY, the son of Donald Sr. and Aleta (Miller) Smith.  His childhood was spent in the New Berlin area, and he was a graduate of New Berlin Central School. He was employed by GE/Unison of Norwich, NY for 21 years as the superintendent of building and grounds and then worked for Unadilla Central School until his retirement.  He attended church at The First Congregational Church of Bridgewater, NY.  He loved his family and children and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, making knives, walking sticks and back scratchers and spending time at his camp.  Don was always willing to take a day and go hunting in the woods and just enjoy the wildlife and his surroundings.  He was always eager to play a practical joke when he could find a willing participant. His sense of humor was as big as his smile and heart.

On August 26, 1972, he married Marcia Saxton, who survives him.  In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his two sons; Brad Smith and significant other, Keri of West Winfield, NY and her children; Haleigh, Aaron, MacKenzie and Ellisyn and Eric Smith of New Berlin as well as one grandson, Weston.  He is also survived by his brothers and their wives; Dale & Arlene Smith of Canajoharie, NY and David & Donna Smith of New Berlin NY and one sister, Debra Smith of New Berlin.  He was predeceased by one sister, Nancy Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at 1:00 PM at the Pittsfield Fire House, Pittsfield, NY.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Cancer Society or The First Congregational Church of Bridgewater, NY.

Dear Marcia and family,
It is so hard to think of our “Donnie” missing from us.
I can still hear our laughter and stories while we played cards and had a cup of tea and molasses or sugar cookies with Grandma Great. Now they are all enjoying time together.
Hugs to you all , and much love.
“ Joanie”
As I was always called.
