David A. Backus, born on September 26, 1957, in New Berlin, New York, passed away on January 5, 2025, in Norwich, New York.
David's professional journey began in various roles, including his time at Kenyon Press Shoe Factory, Raymonds, and Hermie Strains Garage. He later showcased his entrepreneurial spirit by owning his own business, Dave's Service Center, in New Berlin. His career also included invaluable experiences at Titans, Goldens, Crandall's, and Don's Used Cars, where he developed a reputation as a very intelligent and skilled mechanic.
An alumnus of New Berlin High School, David cultivated a life filled with laughter and affection. His personality, described as funny, meek, and mild, endeared him to family and friends alike. David had a profound love for his family, especially his grandchildren, and cherished every moment spent visiting and creating memories with them. His proudest accomplishments centered around his grandchildren and family, providing him with a legacy he deeply valued.
David had a wide array of interests and hobbies that brought him joy. His passion for anything with an engine was evident in his love for motorcycle riding and Sunday drives. He also enjoyed painting and fixing cars, showcasing his creative and mechanical talents.
He is survived by his beloved family, including his sons Chris (Jameylynn) Backus and Justin (Sheena) Backus, and daughter Jamie (Scott) Backus. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Nate (Kate), Savanna, Ethan, Connor, Kolton, Kevin, Skot, Logan, Jaxen, Thor, Nolan, and Teegan, along with his great-grandchildren Cylas, Lucas, and Lennox. David’s close friendships, particularly with Dave and Joan Talbot, were also an essential part of his life.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Brownell; step-father, Clarence Brownell; father, Lewis M. Backus; siblings Donna and Dawn Lewis (Louis); and close friend Donald Briggs.
David A. Backus will be remembered for his warm spirit, unwavering dedication to his family, and his moments of joy shared with loved ones. His life has left a lasting impact on those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished forever.
