Alan Fairbrother

June 2, 1936 — July 6, 2025

Alan Fairbrother, born on June 2, 1936, in Sherwood Forest, England, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025 in the remarkable home he built himself in New Berlin, New York. He was a beloved figure in his community and a true original, known for his amiable nature and ability to forge friendships with everyone he met.

After moving to the United States in 1986, he lived in both Manhattan and Staten Island where he met his dear friend Ivan, before settling in New Berlin in 2004, where he quickly became a cherished member of the community. Alan proudly became a U.S. citizen in 2008. His zest for life was evident through his many pursuits, being actively involved in local historical societies and contributing creatively to community events. A member of the Board of Directors of Unadilla Valley Railway Society and Museum, Alan was dedicated to preserving local history and he was proud to receive their Certificate of Appreciation.

Alan’s professional life was spent as a cabinet maker in New York, where he honed his craft and contributed quality work throughout his long career. However, his true passions lay in athletics; he was an avid cyclist and road racer who competed at the national level. He found extraordinary joy in ultra-distance running, participating in numerous prestigious marathons and races, including the London Marathon and the New York Marathon multiple times. His remarkable achievements included competing in the Empire State run-ups, the Spartathlon in Greece, and the Sydney to Melbourne race in Australia, among many others.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Tony) and son Ian, (Jo); grandson, Aydan (Elle); and great-grandson, Theodore. Alan cherished these relationships deeply and took great pride in his family.

He will be remembered for the indelible impact he made in his community, notably as a friendly presence at the senior center in New Berlin, and for his innovative spirit. Among his proudest accomplishments were creating a "toilet trike," which was displayed in various places, including Prospect Park in Brooklyn and county fairs, as well as designing a Stevenson's rocket and a Thomas the Train for local parades. Alan was a member of many local groups where he met his dear friend Bonnie Jean. Alan's neighbor, Joe was a great friend and support in his later years.

Alan was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey, and his beloved wife, Mary. His legacy lives on through those who loved him and the friendships he cultivated throughout his remarkable journey in life.

An Open Door Party to celebrate Alan's life will be held on August 2nd from 2pm until late at Alan's residence: 1096 County Rd 13, New Berlin, NY 13411.
