Obituaries & Condolences

Mickie Betzold, 97, passed away peacefully on January 26 at the A.O. Fox Nursing Facility in Oneonta, New York. She was the wife of the late Bernard J. Betzold. They were married on May 9, 1945 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Yonkers, New York and were blessed with 63 years together before Mr. Betzold died in 2008.

Mrs. Betzold was born in Yonkers, New York on January 12, 1923. She was the daughter of the late George and Myrtle (Gray) McGrath. She spent her childhood in Yonkers, New York and then East Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe) Pennsylvania. Mickie spent much of her adult life raising her family in Commack, Long Island. She was trained as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware and enjoyed a fulfilling career as a nurse, first in various hospitals and then as a school nurse for the Commack School District before retiring first to Lehighton, Pennsylvania and then Naples, Florida. She spent the last four years of her life surrounded by her family in Edmeston, New York.
Mrs. Betzold is survived by three children and their spouses: Patricia Chilion (Gene) of Edmeston, New York; Thomas Betzold (Cheryl) of St. James, New York; Maryellen Canuel (Tony) of New Berlin, New York. She is also survived by her four grandchildren and their spouses: Jeanine Potter (Terry) of New Berlin, New York; Jennifer (Corey) Ross of Monroe, North Carolina; Nicholas Betzold (Allison) of Sayville, New York; Jan Wust (Rick) of Edmeston, New York and her twelve great-grandchildren: Gabriella, Brayden, Isabella, Declan and Kainoa Potter; Hunter and Brady Ross; Carter and Maggie Betzold; Landon, Lucas and Layla Wust. She leaves three step-grandchildren: Anthony, Andrea and Gregory Canuel. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Herman of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, several nieces and nephews and many very dear friends.

There will be no calling hours. Friends may join the family at a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 24 North Main Street, New Berlin, New York, on Saturday February 8 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at a later date in the columbarium of St. Peter Apostle Catholic Church in Naples, Florida. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Mickie’s memory may be made to the Helping Hands Project of St. Theresa Catholic Church, PO Box 780, New Berlin, New York 13411.
