John Calvin Cross, 77 , died July 2, 2017 at his home in New Berlin.

John was born on March 7, 1940 in Brookfield to Parents Harry and Eleanor Cross. John graduated from Sherburne-Earlville Central School in 1958 and married the love of his life, Darlene Aylesworth on August 15, 1959.

Together they raised their four children Brent, Rhonda, Shari, and Aaron. John worked for O.W. Hubbell & Sons Highway Construction Company for close to forty years as an Operating Engineer. After leaving Hubbell, he and his son Brent then operated their own company called LaCross Highway Construction for five years. In his younger years, John took joy in playing at home in rural East Hamilton with his brothers Howard, Ray, Richard, Leon, Jeff, Grant and sister Clara.

As a child, John enjoyed tinkering with cars and traveling with McCredy Motorsports team to race tracks all over the Northeast. During this time he developed a love of auto racing and with the help of his brother Howard, started their own race team. Later on, both his sons Brent
and Aaron began racing with the support of John and Darlene. John was known as a true racing great. He was a man of extreme integrity, honor, and pride in the racing community. In 2016, he was inducted into the CNY Racing Hall of Fame. He was a role model for for the racing community and a father to everyone he welcomed into Team LaCross Motorsports.

John was a family oriented man who enjoyed traveling with Darlene and the kids. One of their favorite destinations was Daytona Beach, Florida.
John is survived by his wife Darlene, his sister Clara, brothers Howard, Ray, Jeff, and Grant and his children Brent, Shari, and Aaron along with grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday July 11 from 3:00 -5:00 at Dakin Funeral home in New Berlin with a service to follow at 5:00.

Donations can be made to : Columbus Community Church, American Cancer Society, or
American Heart Association.
