Obituaries & Condolences

Alice Southwick, 88, went to meet her Savior on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

Alice was born on June 27, 1925, daughter of the late Rupert Davis and Ruth Beebe Davis. She grew up in the Otego, NY area. During her teen years, she worked as a nanny and housekeeper in the Village of West Oneonta. When she moved to the Village of New Berlin, she provided child care to many local children and later in her life she worked in the kitchen of the Chase Memorial Nursing Home.

On June 14, 1949, she married her best friend, Clyde Southwick. who predeceased her on January 12, 2005. They lived in the Village of New Berlin for most of their life together. She and Clyde attended and were active in the South Edmeston Community Church for many years, where Alice taught Sunday School. She loved Jesus and was quick to share how good He was.

She was a very caring person, who always had a twinkle in her bright blue eyes and a sweet sense of humor. You always knew when she was around because of her infectious laughter. If you didn’t hear her laughing you would hear her humming or singing as she went about her day. Her greatest love was to spend time with her family and friends. Many precious times were spent with her rocking in her chair either visiting with family and friends, rocking the many children in her life, telling stories, or singing songs. She loved taking photographs on special occasions and she loved flowers.

In addition to her husband, Alice was predeceased by her son, Robert Southwick, her sisters, Shirley Davis and Arlene Jones, and her brothers, Arthur Davis, Rupert Davis, and an infant brother, Wilfred Davis.

Alice is survived by her sister, Lorraine Lindsay of Amherst, NY; her grandchildren, Matthew Southwick of Oneonta, NY, and Danielle and Ryan Weeks of New Berlin, NY; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service for Alice on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Hillington Cemetery in Morris, NY. The Rev. Scott Davis, Alice’s nephew, will deliver the eulogy.

Dear Southwick family, Please accept my deep sorrow and regrets for your loss for death is our greatest enemy and always brings much grief and pain which I share because this enemy took my entire family but I found comfort and hope in what Jehovah Gods word the Bible says at John11:11 that says our love ones are just asleep and at John5:28,29 Jesus says we'll see our love ones again and at ICor15:26 we're told that this enemy death will be done away with. These scriptures help me get through each day because I miss my family so much and though we don't know each other I'm truly hoping they'll help you also at this difficult time. Please know that I do share your grief. Sincerely, Gloria
